Financial Assistance Programs
773.838.7977
A variety of financial assistance programs are available through Richard J. Daley College to help students requiring financial assistance to achieve their educational goals. The amount of the awards from most programs is based on demonstrated student financial need. It is important that students understand the concept of demonstrated financial need. Essentially, it is the difference between the cost of a college education and the amount the student and the student's family are able to contribute toward that cost. Included in the cost of education are expenses for tuition, fees, books, and living expenses (room, board, transportation, etc.). A student found to have significant financial need may be awarded a financial aid package composed of awards from two or more different programs, usually a combination of work, grant, and loan funds. Full-time and part-time students meeting the eligibility criteria are eligible for many of the programs.
Ability-to-Benefit
Students wishing to receive federal financial aid must have earned a high school diploma or GED certificate. Students not graduated from high school or have not earned a GED must score at or above the Ability to Benefit test to be financial aid eligible.
Eligibility Criteria
A student wishing to qualify for financial aid must:
- Be enrolled in an eligible program. An eligible program is considered one which leads to an associate degree, an advanced certificate of completion requiring a minimum of 16 semester hours, or a program which is at least a two-year program and is acceptable for full credit toward a bachelor's degree.
- Satisfy the scholastic standards of the College and maintain satisfactory progress as defined in the Student Policy Manual.
Financial Aid Application
Because federal and state agencies determine the funding and the regulations for the financial assistance programs, the College will enforce these regulations and amendments to such programs. Students may be assured that the regulations of all financial assistance programs available to Daley College students are nondiscriminatory on the basis of sex, age, and ethnic background. It is the policy of the College to participate in only such non-discriminatory programs.
Federal Aid
To determine eligibility, students should:
- Complete and mail the Application for Federal Student Aid to: Federal Student Aid Programs, P.O. Box 4015, Mt. Vernon, IL 62864-8615. After about six weeks, the student will receive a Student Aid Report (SAR) by mail.
- Submit all copies of the SAR to the Financial Aid Office to determine eligibility for financial aid.
Campus-Based Aid
Students wishing to apply and be considered for campus-based federal financial aid funds such as the Federal College Work-Study or Supplementary Educational Opportunity Grant Programs (SEOG), must complete the Financial Aid Application (FAA).
Students should visit with the Financial Aid staff seven or more weeks before registration begins to review, process required documents, and determine eligibility. Waiting until the last minute to apply may cause stressfully long delays. Students are required to present all copies of their Federal Student Aid Report to the office of Financial Aid.
The following documents may be required for students selected for verification to determine financial aid eligibility:
- All copies of SAR
- Daley College Financial Aid Application (for campus-based financial aid funds)
- Proof of citizenship or U.S. entry status (acceptable documents for proof of citizenship are birth certificate, voter's registration card, U.S. passport, permanent resident or resident alien card, or Statement of Asylum Granted)
- Original Social Security card
- Signed Federal Tax Return from prior year (form 1040, 1040A or 1040EZ, and, if married, that of the spouse, or if dependent upon parents, that of the parents), or a Public Aid Green Card, or Unemployment, Social Security or Veterans' Benefits statement for the preceding year and the award year.
Copies of required federal and/or state documents listed above, if misplaced, may be obtained from the appropriate agency's local office but may take several weeks to process. Therefore, it is advised that applicants begin gathering documents early. Students with low or no income may be required to go through the verification process.
